Exhibition dates (and a favourite local character)

Just noticed how long it is since my last post - apologies for the silence.

I'm now working hard to pull together my 'Among Trees' exhibition this autumn. The dates have now been confirmed, the show will run from 22nd September until 27th October at Inchmore Gallery near Inverness. Details to follow about the preview, I will post an open invite nearer the time... all will be welcome.

Much of the work for 'Among Trees' will be very local, and during the course of building up images I have got to know certain trees very well, returning many times at different times of the day and in varying conditions. Here's an image of one of my favourite local 'characters' who will be well represented in the exhibition, and who I walk past every morning:

Catching up

Preparing for my talk tonight has led me to catch up on a backlog of processing for various personal projects. I plan to run through four of my ongoing series, including Among Trees. Really enjoying looking through the various shoots over autumn and winter.

Lots of new material which I am mostly holding back for the exhibition, but this image really stood out for me:

Ice detail - new Winter Abstracts material

I've been taking advantage of the recent spell of low temperatures to shoot some new material for my Winter Abstracts collection. It's a series I've been slowly adding to each year, and exhibited a selection from at Inchmore Gallery over Christmas. Here's a new image taken last week while exploring the frozen edges of Black Water near my home. A wider selection can be seen on my personal website

Among Trees update

I'm well on my way to completing all the images for my exhibition this summer - 'Among Trees'. The show will be at the Inchmore Gallery near Inverness, exact date to be confimed but probably Aug/Sep.

Because of the layout of the gallery, I will be displaying in two seperate rooms both about the same size, so I decided some time ago to have one room for colour work and the other for monochrome.

My colour work has been coming along really well, with a particularly fruitful period at the end of Autumn last year (see earlier post). So recently I've been trying to concentrate more on the monochrome images. The stark winter light & bare branches really highlight the structure of trees. I'm pleased with the results and feel the collection is coming together very well.

Regeneration

I've spent quite a bit of time in Edinburgh over the last 12 months - living among such striking wild scenery, I enjoy very much the contrast of city photography from time to time. I frequently find myself drawn to Leith, the port and waterfront of Edinburgh. The landscape has a strong industrial feel, but in recent years has undergone dramatic regeneration with shopping complexes, offices and luxury flats. This contrast makes it a fascinating place to wander and observe - a real landscape of change.

A very productive week

Although this autumn was not a blaze of colour, the conditions for photography have been excellent and I have spent a lot of time in my local woods working on my 'Among Trees' series.

I have been developing this series for about 2 years now and am reaching the final stages. I reckon I have about 80% of the images I want, and will soon have to begin the job of editing the collection down to the ones to appear in my exhibition at Inchmore Gallery next summer. I'm also hoping to produce a limited edition small book of images from the series, to coincide with the show. More details on both to follow next year.

A selection of images from the series is available to look at on my website http://www.iainsarjeant.co.uk - I'm holding back quite a bit of material for the show itself, but I can't resist posting a couple from what has been a very productive week:
